How to Calculate Fuel Consumption
Fuel consumption measures how much fuel a vehicle uses to travel a given distance. The most common unit in Europe is L/100km (liters per 100 kilometers), while the US uses mpg (miles per gallon).
Measuring Real Fuel Consumption
The most accurate method: fill up your tank completely, reset the trip meter, drive a distance, then fill up again. Enter the liters added and the distance driven into this calculator to get your real consumption.
Formula: (Liters used ÷ km driven) × 100 = L/100km
Fuel Consumption Unit Comparison
- L/100km: European standard. Lower is more efficient.
- km/L: How far you go on one liter. Higher is more efficient.
- mpg (US): Miles per US gallon (3.785 L). Higher is more efficient.
- mpg (UK): Miles per Imperial gallon (4.546 L). Always higher than US mpg.
Fuel Saving Tips
Maintain steady speed (90–110 km/h is most efficient), keep tires properly inflated, reduce unnecessary load, and service your vehicle regularly. City stop-and-go traffic uses 30–50% more fuel than highway driving.
